SLEEPING AROUND
Sweet dreams...
The shadows are long by the time we pull in between the stone entrance pillars of Twin Farms, in Barnard, Vermont.
The plowed road winds through the bare birches....
..past an old barn
...and a stone cottage where
icicles hanging from the eves indicate the frigid temperature outdoors
... to the Main House, once the country home of Nobel prize winning author, Sinclair Lewis and his wife, Dorothy Thompson "the first lady of American journalism".
Today TWIN FARMS is a luxury resort where you can curl up by the fire and read an early edition of a Lewis' novel or go skiing on hills just outside your window. What a perfect romantic retreat for a Valentine Get - Away or any get-away at all. Each individual suite has a REAL wood burning fireplace and the wonderful smell of wood smoke lingers in the cold air...
A Wyeth-like image from my window
I am sure it's wonderful in summer , spring or fall but probably not easy to find room at the inn during leaf changing season so book early.
DOROTHY THOMPSON |
As famous as Sinclair Lewis is - wife Dorothy was equally famous in her day. In fact she was considered the second most influential woman in America after Eleanore Roosevelt in the late 1930's- to the mid 40's
WOMAN OF THE YEAR 1942 The character of Tess Harding, played by Katherine Hepburn, was directly based on Dorothy Thompson This was the first movie in which Hepburn was teamed with Spencer Tracy. Their love affair blossomed and lasted a lifetime |
KATHERINE HEPBURN |
SPENCER TRACY Is it possible that they had a tryst at Twin Farms ???? ... and so to bed |
Alecia Beldegreen has compiled a fascinating history of the bed
and illustrated her book with wonderful photographs
and illustrated her book with wonderful photographs
Proving one's royalty can be quite uncomfortable Hans Christaian Anderson's Fairy Tale of The Princess and the Pea Royalty has slept in magnificent beds since the days of Henry VIII at Hampton Court We all know that Henry did a lot of sleeping around and made good use of the many beds available to him at court |
"The Throne"
ANNE BOLEYN 1505-1536 |
Anne Boleyn was the second of Henry's six wives. Alas when she only produced a female heir, Henry trumped up charges against her- said that she had been sleeping around... with her brother no less- and had her sent to The Tower Of London That did not end well for the Queen. |
ELIZABETH I Daughter of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII Liz decided that she would stay away from the marriage bed Known as THE VIRGIN QUEEN Not sure anyone believes that anymore but hey... she kept her head on and grew her empire to it's greatest glory. Elizabeth, like her father knew the importance of PR so when she had her portrait painted she insisted that she look youthful, strong and powerful despite her failing health and loss of teeth. In those days before Botox and Juvraderm the queen stuffed rags into her mouth to puff out her fallen cheeks . It's no wonder she was in bad health- to cover her scars left from small pox , she painted her face with the white mixture of lead and vinegar. Could it be the lady died of lead poisoning ? |
INTERIOR DESIGN- RELA GLEASON Treat yourself like royalty in a contemporary draped bed inspired by those at Hampton Court |

juxtaposed against rough sawn panelling.
GEORGIAN HOUSE |
Booking a stay at Georgian House (on the grounds of Hampton Court) gives you a very special access to the palace and the grounds. To be there at night after the gates have closed out all the daily visitors is very special . Book through the Landmark Trust |
The sun-drenched steps at Georgian House
lead up to four bedrooms.
INTERIOR DESIGN - ANTHONY HADAWAY
A small studio apartment with a four poster bed is a luxurious cacoon in the midst of Manhattan. the mass of the bed gives great importance to one entire wall and serves as a cozy sleeping place as well as for seating. The unexpected scale in the small space makes the whole space feel bigger and more important. I think it was brilliant to use the bed in such an untraditional way.
The opposite wall is "wallpapered" with shelves full of books and found objects of interest. A bicycle often lives leaning against the books and serves as a sculpture when not in use as a means of transportation around town.
FYI- this entire apartment was furnished with discarded pieces the designer found on the curb available for FREE (one of my favorite four letter F words)
"NEW YORK NEW YORK WHAT A WONDERFUL TOWN !"
I love the way four poster beds create a room within a room. They command instant attention. I designed both the Quincy Bed and the Adams Bed as interpretations of the traditional pencil post bed

Not all beds are fit for a royal welcome but they function well and can be very comfortable

Alcove beds have an intrinsic cozy charm Room at the inn... Some of the very best beds are found in hotels and inns where every effort is made to create the ultimate romantic and comfortable experience |

Many hotels will sell you everything from the mattress set to the sheets and blankets.
It may sound crazy but what better then to "test drive" a place you spend half your life.

The F word
Food for Thought
Just outside the jewel Italian city of canals
is the fabulous and untouristed region of the Veneto.
The VILLA BARBARO
An interior trompe l'oeile in the Villa Barbaro
VILLA ROTONDA
The Villa has four identical facades, each with it's own distinctive approach.
This one is my personal favorite as your view is totally channeled between two
parallel walls focusing the eye on the columns , the pediment and the dome
![]() |
The Villa Saracceno For a truly unique experience you can actually book a stay in a Palladian villa if you are visiting The Veneto. Bookings can be made through The Landmark TrustIt's the REAL THING The whole experience of visiting the Palladian Villas can best be described by accurately using the over-used expression AWESOME !!! |
FAUX ... my first F word - an imitation- not authentic- not real
but given a French twist, it's very respectable
Ca'Toga is the truly FAUX Palladian Villa created by
Northern California artist,Carlo Marchiori,
at the northern end of the Napa Valley
Carlo is from The Veneto originally and with his talents and
imagination he has conjured up some serious magic. If
you are in the Napa Valley between May and October
you can book a Saturday tour but if that's not in your travel plans then get
a copy of Carlo's book.

Ca'Toga |
Not every artist from the Venetto is an avid follower of Palladio.
CARLO SCARPA
1905-1978
Carlo Scarpa, one of the leading modernist architects
of the 20th century was also from the Venetto
It's worth the drive on narrow dirt roads
through fields of poppies to find the Brion Sanctuary
![]() |
Scarpa designed the tomb for the Brion family. It's a spectacular monument with a Zen quality. Concrete-bronze - and water. There is no faux or fake here. This is pure Brutalism at it's best |
![]() |
Scarpa himself is also buried at the sanctuary in a far corner, wrapped in linen like a medieval knight and encased in concrete in a standing position. |
THOMAS JEFFERSON
1743-1826
Thomas Jefferson, a great disciple of Palladio, may actually be the real "father of our country."
He began what was to become a 38 year relationship with Sally Heming, his 16 year old slave,
while he was serving as the US Ambassador to France in the years just prior to the French Revolution.
All evidence including DNA testing points to the fact that he was the father of her six children.
I am a fan of all films directed by James Ivory and this one gives a
wonderful glimpse into the life of Jefferson and his relationship with
Sally while they were living in France
So there is that other F word (the one that got you interested in this entry in the first place)
and guess where it all began...
in France
Jefferson designed the United States Capital
as well as his Virginia home MONTICELLO
The Palladian Inspirations are self-evident.
When a neighbor asked him for architectural advice
Jefferson replied,
"Palladio is the Bible. You should get it and stick to it."
BTW... Did you know that Jefferson also invented the swivel chair ? I picked up that little tidbit from Season I of Downton Abbey. I am addicted to the PBS series on every Sunday night at 9:00 pm
FAKE... The other F word- not real; an imitation with the connotation of being inferior
Are you old enough to remember this ad campaign from the 1960's...
![]() |
So can you identify the beauty in this photograph ? |
![]() |
Coke has been "banking" on The Real Thing |
...and seems to have worked for George
... it didn't work for Elmyr de Hory, an artist who could find no market for his own works in the 1940's so he began forging original works of art in the style of the celebrated painters of the day-
FAKE...
without that French twist it seems to have a negative connotation
FAKE...
without that French twist it seems to have a negative connotation
Good name for a forger don't you think ? sound it out DE HORY
Picasso, Matisse- Renoir- Modigliani-Gaugin
![]() |
De Hory escaped suspicion by never copying real existing works but rather painting new subjects in the style of... |
SO... why is an imitation any less worthy or good
just because it's not by a celebrated artist ?
Elmyr never signed any of his canvases and legally there is no crime for painting in the style of... It's only a forgery for legal purposes if the works are falsely signed.
Elmyr gained fame and notoriety with the publication of Clifford Irving's book FAKE
Ironically Clifford Irving went on to fake the
auto-biography of Howard Hughes.
Monkey see Monkey do
![]() |
Howard Hughes What a babe - could have played James Bond |
![]() |
Orson Welles rode the De Hory hysteria to the bank and filmed the documentary on the forger helping to perpetuate the legend |
Ching ching ching- "Money Makes the World Go Around."
De Hory, possibly the finest forger in art history,
became very collectible for his own work after he died in 1976.
Forged copies of his paintings began to crop up in the art market.
Faux
Fake
Forged -
For sure ! All F words
You get a lot of BLING for the BUCK with Kenneth Lane's FABULOUSLY FAKE jewels.
![]() |
Seems that FAKE was good enough for the Duchesse The Duke with the Duchess of Windsor in her KL Pearls |
FAUX - FAKE - and FINE.
![]() |
Shramsberg sparkling wines can't be called champagne because they are not made in the Champagne appellation of France. However they are neither Fake nor Faux They are truly FINE ! |
In fact they are so fine that President Nixon took 17 cases of
Shramsberg Napa Valley
with him to China in 1972 on that historic occasion when an American president
went to China for the first time
Whatever your politics may be, you will most likely agree with the toast he gave.
" A TOAST TO PEACE."
